There are big challenges to integrating the LED media façade into existing architectures. Because each building has its own characteristics, such as various surface structures, facade materials, its own dimensions, etc. Especially for iconic buildings that always have a unique design. Thus, the media facade should not only be consistent with the original design, but also necessary for further brand building.
1, Seamlessly integration of the led media facade into the building
If the LED facade didn’t integrate well into the building or its facade, the media wall seems separate from the building only with its own level of meaning. It would be like a traditional led screen mounting on the wall, which plays bright advertising content when it’s on, and become dark square area when it’s off. There is no aesthetic feeling at all. It is not the media architecture we want to make with led media facade.
Each LED media façade solution should be smart enough to be able to adapt to the building material, dimensions, spatial surfaces, the surrounding weather conditions, the design concept of the architects and special requirements from the clients.
2, Covering multi-dimensional or irregular shaped surface
Building facade is not always simply flat surface. Sometimes it is a three-dimensional surface, and sometimes it is irregular shape like a triangle or curved style. The LED media façade need to be flexible and size-customizable to be able to wrap up the area perfectly.
3, Inventing building materials by integrating with led facade elements
For some project requirements, the clients want to maximum keep the integrity of the original architectural design, with cables and controllers invisible. The most innovative solution is to turn the led media facade into the part of the actual fabric of the building. For example, the led facade pixels were integrated into aluminum plate as building materials. This is a full integration of dynamic led façade screen into the architecture.
4, Not obstructing the sunlight entering inside, and able to watch outside view for residents
It is very important not to affect the light condition of inside space much when build an outdoor screen over the window or glass. Getting enough natural sunlight entering the inside space is also the original design goal for the architects. That’s the reason that designers like to choose transparent led display. It will be great if we make the led façade screen with transparency as high as possible, which was also essential to build a large-area media façade over the skyscraper glass.
Besides sunlight, from the point of view of the occupants, it is also important that they can enjoy an unobstructed view. A transparent led display may be translucent, but not enough. LED media façade has much higher transparency than normal led screen and small pitch transparent led curtain. It is also not 100% transparent.
There is a logical conflict between the transparency rate and the pixel quantity of led media facades. More pixels in the area get a higher screen resolution that allows for the sharper and more detailed picture but gets lower transparency. The pixel pitch (pixel density) is also related to the optimal viewing distance. The father away from the led façade to the observer, the bigger pixel pitch(lower resolution) is allowed. So as long as a meaningful overall image can be recognized, you don’t need to make the highest resolution. We need to find the best balance between transparency and pixel pitch.
5, Guarantee long-life durability of led media facade, especially for permanent installation
Building a led media façade outside permanently isn’t so easy that you need to choose a durable led façade and carry out a sleek and stable installation. When doing some big events like the Olympic games or big ceremonies, it need also invest much money and energy in planning and installation to make it successful. There are some parameters need to be considered seriously to guarantee its durability.
IP67 can get the led media facade work well under the exterior environment. IP65 is safe rainproof grade for outside led screen, but we’d better do IP67 for a permanent installation considering attaching the led media façade to the wall tightly. There might be unexpected water collection after condensation in winter.
The normal working temperature is -20℃~+50℃. But when comes to extremely cold weather conditions, enduring temperature need be lower as -30℃ or -40 ℃. When in a very hot place like in the Middle East, summer temperature can climb up to +60℃. Not only work well in the lowest and highest condition, but the durable media facade should also bear the big temperature change from daytime to overnight.
For traditional outdoor led digital signage, we didn’t think much of the wind strength. When comes to install a media façade on a skyscraper surface, the wind on hundreds of meters high may be up to 100km/hour or more. That’s the thing we need to take into account and make a strong fixing structure.
Exposed under sunlight for a long time, UV resistant needs to be made.
OTHER HARSH WEATHER
For a special region, there is a particular weather condition. Special treatment will be used during the planning and installation, like salty-proof when close to the sea, sand-proof when near to the desert.
6, Making less energy consumption as you can
LEDs are energy-saving lighting source because of its high luminous efficiency. But if you use millions led pixels in a large-format media façade project, the energy consumption became very big. When you want to compete with sunlight, viewable in the daytime, the led façade will be designed with brighter pixels or higher resolution. This will increase consumption too. You need to check the energy overall consumption and the electrical cost along with the viewability and definition and plan the electrical thing in advance.
7, Picking right media content is very important for a successful media facade
Picking the right media content is very important for the led media facade. Because it not only tells the story of the building, but also reflect the relationship between the architecture and surrounding space. It shows the aesthetic of the owners and helps build the building brand.
When designing the video content, we should consider three parts, the identity of the owner or the advertiser company, the led façade and building shape, and the environment space around. And we need to ask some questions: How to integrate the advertising or information with the building shape perfectly? What type of massage can enhance the building’s identity? Which tone is suitable for the surrounding environments? How to engage with the communities and pedestrians?
The media façade video designing requires a lot of expertise and much sensitivity for architecture and urban space. The designing process is better in parallel with the planning and installation of led media façade. If too late, close to or after you finish the installation, the content design will be restricted and there is no much thing able to change or update.
The poor content will affect people’s perception of the building. A successful content will draw the attention of the pedestrians, let residents feel personally connected to the building, benefits the proprietors from the advertising effects, more importantly, arise the relationships and identifications between viewers and building.
